Part 3

The end for William

In mid May the 4th Worcestershire were made up to strength by fresh drafts and moved back into the battle area, the Battalion moved by train to Arras where Quarters were set up in the cellars of ruined houses in the Grande Place.
The Battalion remained there until on May 14th they moved foward into the battle area. For a week the Battalion were in reserve or support positions, mainly providing work and entrenching parties. On May 20th the Battalion went foward to the front line, the division stretched from Monchy to the River Scarpe and The Worcestershire relieved the Northamptonshire Yeomanry in trenches south of the river, the battalion held these trenches until the end of the month.

The Battalion made several attempts by night to establish posts further foward, all these attempts failed and cost the lives of many soldiers including brave William Spickett who fell along with ten others on the night of May 29th 1917.
