Part 1

Young William

William Charles Spickett was born in Bristol in 1898. He lived at 10 Tankards close in the St Michaels area of the city. His mother and father were William and Emma Spickett, he also had two brothers and six sisters.Records of William joining the Army have so far not been found.
When the war started William would have been to young to join up but with the war being part of everyday life, the advertising that made it look glamorous and the thought of doing his bit for King and Country he would have probably joined up at eighteen and after a short period of training he would have been sent to the front to go into battle against the germans.

William joined the Worcestershire Regiment and it is known that he enlisted in bristol. He was a Private in the 4th Batalion and his service number was 36664.
William was killed at nineteen years old so he may only have been a soldier for about a year.

Training for war seemed to be an enjoyable time for William, below you can see a postcard he sent home.
